Apply Yourself
So you've decided you need a change - the hardest part maybe deciding exactly WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO? You will need to develop a FOCUS for your job search by forming a clear idea of your career goals that reflect what you are looking for in a position, and what you have to offer an employer. You will need to apply this FOCUS at each stage of the recruitment process from your CV Presentation and Covering Letter, through applying for positions, Interview Preparation and interview exchange, to the final acceptance (or rejection) to keep your career search on track.

Focus on what you enjoy and you will be more successful
It is widely accepted that we excel not only at what we are good at, but also at what we enjoy doing. If you identify what you enjoy doing and find a role involving this, then you are going to be happier and therefore more successful.

Firstly, write down a list of all the functions involved in your current role, then for each function label whether you enjoy this, are neutral about it, or do not enjoy it. We all have aspects of our roles that we would rather not have do to; routine administration, monthly reports and forecasting are a few common ones.

Secondly, write down any functions not involved in your current role and label them similarly. Think why you have labelled these functions in this manner, especially the aspects you do or do not enjoy.

Thirdly remember this information and use this grid when you are evaluating a new role, ensure during the interview process you uncover how much time you will spend involved with the various job functions. This will assist you finding a role that is a good match for what you enjoy doing.

If you are serious about a career move, then APPLY YOURSELF TO THE JOB, of securing the right new position.

Your Marketing Literature

Your CV is your main marketing tool and is the first thing a potential employer sees of you, so make sure you MAKE THE RIGHT FIRST IMPRESSION. You will need to produce the ultimate marketing literature which represents you and your career goals and will convey your message effectively. Your CV Presentation is essential to getting past the first stage of the recruitment process and securing an interview.

No application is complete without a Covering Letter. This is your opportunity to express your personality and convince the employer why you are suitable for the position.

The Interview Exchange
What is the client looking for? What am I looking for? Do these match? The interview is an opportunity for both parties to answer these questions. Thorough Interview Preparation will help you to get the most out of each interview situation to enable you to make an informed decision when the offers start rolling in.

TIP: To stand the best possible chance of being successful it is sensible to first convince the interviewer of your capabilities and interest in the role, therefore making them interested in you, before asking probing questions about the company and role.
