Why you should continue your job search this festive period!

The festive period is here again; the perfect time to lounge around in front of a fire, glass of mulled wine in hand. It is the perfect time to slow down your job search. Or is it?

 1.       Less competition

Due to the common misconception that businesses stop recruiting before the New Year means that less people are applying for jobs. In December 2015 we had at least 100 less applicants compared to months such as January, March and June. Our statistics even show that we had a 64% difference between applications in December and June. That’s a 64% advantage to you in December!  Applying in December not only keeps the competition at bay, but also shows potential future employers that you don’t just want a job for Christmas, but for the long run too!

 2.       Why wait?

If you’ve already decided that you want a new direction – why wait? If you apply in December you could be in a new role by the end of January rather than having to return to your old position in the New Year. Returning to a role you dislike and have checked out of can be demoralising and it could still potentially take 3-6 months for you to leave. Starting in December, earlier than most other people, will ensure that your search moves along quicker than if you were to start in the New Year.

 3.       Recruiter advantage

As market activity slows down on the approach to Christmas, this gives your recruiter an advantage. We have more time to be proactive for candidates and the ability to do things such as approaching companies that you really want to work for. At this time of year as a recruiter, we’re getting up-to-date information from our clients on hiring needs for now and in the New Year. This means working with your recruiter now can give you an advantage over other job seekers who are putting off the search until the New Year.

 4.       Top of the pile

Even if the company you wish to work for doesn’t look at their applicants until the New Year, getting your application in during December gives you the advantage to be top of the pile. Risking applying in January could potentially see you at the bottom of the pile of CVs; it could even see you missing an opportunity. Actively looking and applying around the festive period shows serious intentions on finding that new career opportunity.

 5.       Time to think

Searching in December allows you to have a really good think about what you really want from your career; for example what kind of position, salary or company you would like to work for. This gives you more time to think and act on it than it would if you had waited until after the festive period.
