Do You Adapt Enough to Survive?

It may be a surprise to some that in Charles Darwin’s “Origin of Species” he does not refer to the “survival of the fittest”. Darwin later adopted the phrase from elsewhere, but classified fittest as meaning "better adapted for immediate, local environment". It does not mean fittest in the sense of the fastest, biggest or strongest. Essentially, I believe, it means that those species that are able to best able to make the most of conditions that currently prevail have enhanced chances of survival and prosperity.

This got me thinking about how this relates to business, so here are some thoughts that I thought I would share:

  • Your product or service might be technologically advanced, and theoretically of great value, but are you helping it through its early vulnerable stages of evolution to give it maximum chances of survival? The funding for your development is like the food and shelter that will sustain the early growth that will enable it to gain a foothold in the ecosystem. How challenging is your immediate funding environment, and is it proportionate to your needs?
  • Choose your niche. It may be tempting to go for the biggest market, but will that bring you into direct competition with the biggest beasts in the forest? It is probably best to go unnoticed by them to begin with until you are ready to challenge them! A good study of economics will tell you whether your assumptions stand scrutiny.
  • Barriers to entry: You are going to face lots of other animals in the forest that have a vested interest in not letting you be successful, as it will disadvantage them. It is best not to ignore them, but to recognise them and adapt your offering to get around them or work with them to mutual benefit.
  •  Keep adapting and diversify your existence. As you evolve, keep adapting to the changing needs of the ecosystem. If you wish to grow fast, you will have your best chance if you develop intelligence. In business terms this means acquiring the best and most diverse talent to optimise what you have, and to keep driving the pace of change.    

Adapt and survive, or remain rigidly opposed to change and accept gradual or rapid decline. Most organisms do not have the ability to deliberately choose to adapt, whereas businesses do.
